Where in Hell Did He Go
by Edwin Brown
A good friend of mine and I came in here one spring to tap a few trees and boil down some maple syrup. Once we got squared around and got unloaded he decided to put on the kettle and have a little lunch. After he got the camp stove going he took a bucket to the spring for some water.
While he was busy getting the water I decided to step up onto the ridge and tap a few trees. I only tapped three trees before I came back down to the camp and by jingles he wasn't there.
Right away I went down to the spring but he wasn't there either! So I sat down to wait for a while and said to myself, "Now where in hell did he go?"
I went back up to the camp and there was still no sign of him anywhere. Back I go to the spring and he's still not to be seen. Then I begin to holler, and I can holler quite loud ya know. I listened real sharp but I don't hear a sound from him.
I go back to the camp again but he's still among the missing. By this time I was getting a bit bothered, ya know. It was coming on to evening and I thought he might have fallen into a hole and broken a leg or something. I didn't know if maybe I should go out to the settlement and get some people to help find him or what.
Anyway, I decided to make one more trip to the spring and when I get there I holler just as loud as I can holler. I hollered so much and so loud my throat was starting to get sore and my voice weaken.
As I was about to give up I heard just a faint sound away way off! It was him! We kept shouting at each other and he kept coming closer to me. He kept coming closer and closer and closer.....
Finally he shouted out," Where are you?"
I hollered back,"I'm here at the spring!"
He sheepishly answered, "Well, I might as well dump this bucket of water."
He lugged that full bucket of water all the time he was lost!!
