IT SAVED THEM
by Fred Butler
Jack Tozer told me about one time be was hauling logs and almost got himself into a terrible mess. He was coming down a big hill with a load of logs, and when he slumped into a little hog in the trail the pole slipped out of the neck yoke. It dropped right down on the road and bounced along between the horses.
He was on a hill and there was no way to hold the load back or anything else. He thought for sure that the load would run over the team and kill them right there. It was picking up speed and when he looked up be saw the turn in the road. He said he thought that when he come to the turn he might be able to throw one horse over the other and save their lives.
Just as he was about to make his move to save the team, didn't that gol durn pole bounce on a bump on the road and fly up into the rigging! The rigging held the pole long enough for them to make the turn. It saved them!
I often noticed that Jack always put his rigging awful tight. I wonder if it was from this ••••.•.•
