I NEVER GOT HIM HOME
By John Godfrey
I cut a horse with an axe one time. I was hauling pulp whit two horses on two different sleds, I loaded while they were feeding and when I got the loads on, this little black horse--he was a lovely horse but he was awful quick ya know-- I had inside shafts and there was a little tree that i knew for sure would catch the jump and dropped a hind foot as far under that axe as possible!
Talk about blood! That axe blade went about half way down through his hoof. I put a swifter tourniquet on it and turned her tight to slow down the flow of blood. I led him out of the woods as quick as I could.... but I never got him home. I got only as far as Gills' which was a bout a half mile from our place, and i put him in their barn,
That horse never ate another bite. This happened on one Friday, and he died on the next Friday, He was bled out.
(Mr Godfrey was in his eighty's when he told me this story and although the incident had happened over fifty years ago he still tea red up at the loss of his "Little Horse")
