A writing to Dewey Gillespie from a very respected friend

Women of refinement and gentle
manner, have been tying classic salmon flies since the mid 19th
century. A Mrs. Courtney originated a classic salmon fly called “The Kate.”
It was first fished on the Scottish river Tweed in the mid 1850’s. Francis Francis described
“The Kate” in his book, a book on angling (1867), as one of the new flies for
the river Tweed The work of many of the
world’s best fly-dressers is women. Remember! If it were not for women, we
would not have men fly-dressers found throughout the world today. Ladies, you
are second to none.
